Revamped FIT kit

Theme: Design for a cause

When received the title of the project, instantly, i thought back in my memory back to the younger years of when i was 15 in which a dear friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, 2 more of my close friends has been diagnosed with different sort of cancer, thus feeling an close relation in my surroundings to this disease, singapore cancer  society is one of  my top choice when asked to pick an NGO to work on for this project.

Singapore cancer society (SCS) has been chosen as the final choice for the main non-governmental organization (NGO) for this project.

Various research has been done from the previous activities, upcoming activities, and activities on the long run.

One of the activity that caught my attention is the FIT test, and thus i decided to delve my research deeper into it, eventually finding out several areas of shortcomings within the current kit which could be improved.

Singapore Cancer Society

‘To be the first port of call for the entire cancer journey’
SCS focus most of their activities educating to audience about the true nature of cancer and sends tries to send as much positive messages about life despite the contact with cancer as possible.

Cancer is not preventable, however there are several ways to detect cancer early. Among many different type of methods, i decided to focus on my research on the FIT kit (Faecal Immunochemical Test)

Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)

The FIT test is a colorectal cancer detecting kit that could be used from within the comfort of home at the convienice of the user.  Aimed to be used within age 50 and above, this kit is used to extract occult blood from stool samples and is then sent for a professional medical check up via post to find out if the user is colon cancer positive potentially saving a life.

The kit could be found distributed free to the audience through pharmacy booths.

Revamped FIT kit

FIT Revamp!

A more user-friendly medical kit for early detection of colorectal cancer

Cancer refers to an uncontrollable division of cells that grows abnormally within a body. It has the effect of taking away one's strength and life if left untreated and undetected. To encourage early detection, multiple research methodologies have been done to detect cancer cells within a body during their early stages. The Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) kit is one of those methods found by oncologists.

FIT Revamp is a project to remodel the existing FIT medical kit to make it more user-friendly so that people are more receptive to early testing. The essential function of the FIT kit is to test if the user could potentially be diagnosed with colorectal cancer. By examining if the user's stool sample contains occult blood, this kit could potentially detect cancer cells and thus start early treatment for cancer cell eradication. This process, however, may be too complicated or daunting for the elderly for whom the kits are generally distributed to. FIT Revamp aims to improve the existing kit to make it easy to understand and use.

Shortcomings observation

- Visual appearance of the kit (Packaging)

- Improvisation done to instruction guide

- Redesign of probe

- Design of collection pad ( Improvisation from collecting stool step)

Looking into the major flaws of the original kit, improvement has been made and corrected to some of the steps written within the instruction guide, as well as improvement made to the probe to enhance it’s performance.
